Sugar Hill (1974) 1 brainhalf brain

Alternate Titles:

Voodoo Girl
The Zombies of Sugar Hill

Sugar Hill was a different kind of zombie movie. I think this is the only movie I've seen where the zombies are the good guys. Or at least, they're controlled by the heroine, who we're supposed to be rooting for. Marki Bey plays the title character, who seeks help from the voodoo god Baron Samedi after her boyfriend is murdered by gangsters. Baron Samedi gives Sugar an army of the undead to do with as she pleases, and she sets about exacting her revenge. Sugar's activities go mostly unhindered, except for by a cop who's also an ex-boyfriend, who thinks there's something fishy about the gangsters that are turning up dead.

This movie was pretty bad. The zombie makeup consisted of face paint and weird, insectile, golden eyes. I'm not sure how the zombies were supposed to have gotten these eyes, but details like that didn't really seem to matter in this movie. Given the script they had to work with, the acting in the movie is passable, but it was a pretty lousy script, so that's not saying much. It is campy, so it's somewhat entertaining, but mostly I was just waiting for the end.
